Learning Beyond the Classroom

Real-world experiences that inspire curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of learning.

Children in the Squirrels Room benefit from a wide range of carefully planned visits and outdoor learning experiences designed to enrich their understanding of the world.

These experiences include woodland walks, nature exploration, farm visits, coastal learning trips, wildlife encounters, and guided outdoor sessions led by experienced staff and external partners. Each visit is carefully risk-assessed and planned to support the EYFS curriculum while encouraging curiosity, communication, and confidence.

Outdoor learning takes place throughout the year, with activities adapted to the seasons and weather conditions. Children are always appropriately equipped to ensure comfort, safety, and enjoyment.

These experiences help children develop language, social skills, physical coordination, and a deeper understanding of the world around them, while also building confidence in new and stimulating environments.

Outdoor Learning & Excursions

We are committed to providing children with meaningful outdoor learning experiences that extend beyond the nursery environment. Trips and walks are carefully planned throughout the year and integrated into our curriculum.

In the warmer months, children typically take part in a planned excursion approximately once every three weeks, alongside shorter local walks in between. These experiences are always dependent on weather conditions and appropriate access to facilities. Regular updates about planned activities and visits are shared with parents in advance.

Our regular visits may include woodland exploration, nature trails, coastal learning, wildlife parks, farms, and local outdoor environments. Each location is selected to enhance learning themes, encourage curiosity, and support children’s physical, emotional, and social development.

All visits are fully supervised, carefully risk-assessed, and planned with children’s safety and wellbeing as the highest priority. Outdoor clothing and equipment are provided to ensure children are prepared for all weather conditions.

These experiences allow children to connect their learning to the real world, develop independence, and build confidence through exploration and discovery.
